Book Club partners with Dymocks

by Danielle Bilski

TCC is excited about our partnership of the Thurgoona Community Centre Book Club with Dymocks bookshop in Albury providing access to new release books.

Dymocks is a locally owned family business in the heart of Albury, located on Olive Street in the Myer Centrepoint. Thurgoona residents, Heather and Andrew Cirovic have been welcoming local and visiting booklovers and writers from all over Australia since they took over the business in early 2020.

Locals are invited to join the TCC Book Club which meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the centre to talk about a book they are reading or have read, in a relaxed informal atmosphere within a community of fellow readers.

By joining the Book Club, you will have early access to new books being released as well as bestselling books voted on the 2023 Dymocks Top 101 list.

Two members of the TCC Book Club recently shared their reviews on books they have read.

Sylvia MacKenzie read A Disappearance in Fiji by Nilima Rao and says its:

“An easy read by an author who is a Fijian/Indian/Australian woman.
This interesting book helped me to know how the Coolies (the real working people (were treated and mistreated on the plantations in Suva, Fiji, in 1914.
It is a crime novel about a missing woman and explores history, romance, and the mix of cultures back then.”

Fellow member, Gayner shares reviews on three books – Feast by Emily O’Grady, Barren Grounds by B. Michael Radburn and Exquisite Corpse by Marjia Pericic.

Feast by Emily O’Grady
“A well-written book. O’Grady can turn the trivia of mundane, everyday life into addictive reading. Unfortunately her skill is such that the reader is repelled by the feast of obnoxious, self-obsessed characters who infest the pages. By the end, one wishes only to retreat to the shower armed with Dettol and a Brillo pad to slough off the last vestiges of any repulsive mannerisms inadvertently acquired while reading the book.”

Barren Grounds by B. Michael Radburn
“Well written, easy to read. A superior detective-murder whodunnit with a relentlessly developing plot and a satisfactory climax.”

Exquisite Corpse by Marjia Pericic
“A well written book, based on a true story. Sequentially narrated from the viewpoints of four different people, including the corpse! If you don’t mind an overdose of information about rancid cadavers, this is a good read.”
