Creative Sewing Tweens

Makenzy Walkington (grade 6 TPS) is using her new sewing skills to create her own items for her wardrobe.
She attends the Creative Sewing Tweens classes at Thurgoona Community Centre tutored by Krystal Kaye, local textiles designer.
“Through Krystal’s classes I have made two skirts and two shorts and this time, I thought why not change it up and include a ruffle,” explained Makenzy today in class. “There were a lot of fabrics to choose from, but this green chequered fabric stood out.”
Makenzy started learning with the Creative Sewing Tweens holiday workshops held at Thurgoona Community Centre. She and her sister have then continued for three terms with the Saturday fortnight classes.

What do you like about the classes? “It’s an opportunity to make your own clothes and soon I’ll have a wardrobe with clothes in it I have made myself.”

Was it hard to learn? “When you have a professional like Krystal to teach you it makes it easier. It wasn’t hard for me to learn.”

What’s the best thing about coming to class? “Meeting new people and getting to know classmates – we have a lot of fun.”

Creative Sewing Tweens Holidays programs will be on again on July 4th ,6th and 11th at Thurgoona Community Centre from 10.00 am to 3.00pm. The cost is $20. Each workshop teaches basic machine sewing skills and students achieve a sewing license at the end of the day and availability to attend the Saturday term classes. Limit is to one program in the holiday.
